Skate festival, Malmesbury Abbey.
A commisson for LNP news Agnecy London.
The Skate festival in Malmesbury Abbey is an annual event inside the 12 century Benedictine Abbey.
It is run with Christian surfers.
Skaters and scooter riders enjoy the skate park built inside the old building during the half term holidays.
The issue with this type of job is the lighting.
It’s very dim in the abbey, hence you need some sort of supplemental light for the foreground subject.
This is where I bring in to play a portable strobe set up.
Portable strobe / flash is used off to back left.
This allowed (using TTL) the flash to illuminate the rider.
The ambient exposure picked up the background of the Abbey roof vaults and windows.
In fact it is in a situation like this that you can actually have quiet a slow shutter speed.
Initially you might think that a slow shutter would make the rider looked blurred.
However the use of the flash light in effect freezes the skater in action.
Any slight bur from the skater moving during the ambient part of the exposure is negated by the brightness fo the flash exposure.
In effect the flash over rides the ambient light.
Once balanced you get (in effect) the right exposure for the background and the foreground subject.
