Classical pianist Angela hewitt performing in Bristol. A commisson for The Guardian newspaper and on line sections highlighting press photography.
When you are commissioned by a newspaper here in the UK it is quite often the case that they are relying on you as a professional to get the shot.
The great thing about these commissions means that you are working alone.
One has to make creative and technical decisions that will ultimately get you the picture.
On this occasion the revue and artist requested that the photographer should not be seen, not to put off the pianist during the performance.
Not only this but the venue was quite dark.
So decisions needed to be made about where to locate before the start as I could not move about during the concert.
The venue was quite dark and I only had 5 minutes to work on the image.
Decisions were made and a location found. These shots were all taken at 6400 ISO and required an aperture of only f2.8 to f4 and a shutter speed of only 1/60s.
Although these might not seem like ideal settings it was the only way to get enough flexibility whilst also being able to freeze any motion in the performance.
Proper post production meant that any noise from the high ISO could be minimised and over the 5 minutes or so I obtained a set of 20 images for the paper.
